Childbirth Related Stress and Depression Services

SCWHS offers a range of perinatal services and supports to women who may be experiencing some difficulties after the birth of a child or who may benefit from the support of other women in similar circumstances. The services are funded through the Office of Mental Health. Child minding is available to clients through the SCWHS Crèche .

All the PND services only run during school term times.

Individual Counselling

Individual appointments may be arranged with a counsellor and can be useful in addressing the changes and adjustments that occur following the birth of a child. SCWHS has been providing this service since 1992.

How to access this service
The service is open to women and their partners. A referral is not needed. Reduced rates apply to Health Care Card holders and a small yearly access fee also applies and is payable at the time of the appointment.

Prior to an appointment all clients are given a date and time to call back to speak to a counsellor to ensure SCWHS is the best service to meet their needs.

Weekly Support Group

This group has been operating since 2002 and provides an opportunity for women to share experiences and to develop useful coping strategies. It is also helpful in overcoming feelings of isolation.

The group is open to all women following an initial assessment by a SCWHS counsellor to ensure the group is appropriate to their needs. A small fee is payable for each session and a small yearly access fee also applies.

Therapy Group

This group is time limited to 10 weeks. The kinds of issues that are addressed through the group work range from communication and interpersonal skills, assertiveness skills and building self-esteem. SCWHS has operated this service since 1997.
